Grow Community of Independents

Garth MacDonald

Garth MacDonald was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan and was raised on the family farm near Stranraer. He always enjoyed farming and planned on being a farmer while growing up. He attended the College of Agriculture at University of Saskatchewan the first fall after graduating from high school. After that he drove a Coca Cola delivery truck for one year and then worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia as a loans officer for two years in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan.

His start in the agriculture retail industry was with Agripower Equipment in Kindersley, Saskatchewan selling John Deere equipment. Upon getting married in 1985, Garth and Gayle moved to Regina. He started working with Watson Tractor, selling John Deere equipment. During this time he met Dale Cowan with Cowan Fuel and Fertilizer and took a position as a Location Manager at Indian Head, Sask with Cowan Fuel.

Imperial Oil offered Garth the opportunity to become the Imperial Oil agent for Kindersley and Alsask. As a result of this offer Garth, Gayle, and their two young children Janelle and Joel arrived in Kindersley in the spring of 1991.

Garth and Gayle founded G-Mac’s AgTeam Inc. in 2000. G-Mac’s now has 5 retail locations; Kindersley, Plenty/Dodsland, Eatonia, Marengo, and Leader.

Garth has served on the board of the Kindersley Junior Klippers for 7 years (2 as President). He also served on the board of the Kindersley Curling Club and volunteered as an assistant coach in minor hockey for over 10 years. It has always been important to Garth and Gayle to support all communities in West Central Saskatchewan.

Garth and Gayle’s success came from hard work and a passion for agriculture. Garth says that, “It is this type of passion that is typical of the independent retail. This passion leads the increase in crop production in Western Canada.”

Garth was one of the initiating members of Grow Community of Independents and it is his independent spirit that founded the heart of the community.
