Grow Community of Independents

Dale McKay

Dale McKay was born and raised on a cattle farm in Wawanesa, Manitoba. He grew up in agriculture and knew nothing better than to be a part of it for a lifetime. He was involved in agriculture from birth. He wasn’t born into the crop supply business, but he eventually made his way to a significant role in one. He met his wife in 1985 at a social, even though he had known her for years because they both grew up in the cattle business. They were married in 1986 and now have three kids, Sarah, Kale, and Ashley.

Also in 1986, Dale started working for Shur-Gro Farm Services. He started as an operator, and through evolution moved to operations, sales trainee, to doing cold sales calls. The evolution continued as he got into agronomy and eventually to assistant manager, co-manager of the Brandon branch, all the way up to where he sits today, on the GM’s chair, where he has been for about 12 years.

The business has changed almost as much as his position in it, from growing to new locations to integrating Munro Farm Supplies with Shur-Gro, and now to being a part of Grow Community of Independents, which to Dale means being able to offer more to his growers. Dale says, “It’s important to keep the independent retailers alive because they are the innovators. They try to bring new and better ideas and lead in agronomy and again trying to go that few more bushels every year just to make our growers more profitable.”
